This study aims to provide a comprehensive examination of the public opinion landscape surrounding presidential impeachment as reflected in portal news comment sections during the December 3 martial law episode, as well as the characteristics of users who shaped this landscape. Specifically, the study (1) calculated overall and outlet-specific comment-based opinion on impeachment using three indicators—the proportion of comments, the proportion of likes and dislikes, and a combined indicator of comments plus likes/dislikes—and compared these measures with results from institutional public opinion polls; (2) analyzed the political orientations and characteristics of comment authors; (3) examined the proportion and traits of heavy commenters who dominated comment production; and (4) assessed the proportion of cross-media users who posted comments on news outlets with opposing ideological leanings, along with the distribution of comments posted to ideologically congruent versus incongruent outlets by political orientation. To this end, the study collected 17.8 million comments under the news reports of martial law and impeachment posted on Naver.com between December 4, 2024, the day following the declaration of emergency rule, and April 3, 2025, the day preceding the Constitutional Court’s impeachment ruling, spanning a total of 121 days. The dataset covered comments from 25 news outlets and included commenter-specific IDs, numbers of likes and dislikes, and other comment-related metadata. These data were analyzed using a machine learning approach based on the KcBERT model. The results show that opinion measured by comment volume most closely resembled institutional survey averages, with 60.4% supporting impeachment and 37.7% opposing it. In contrast, opinion measured by likes/dislikes and by the combined indicator exhibited a pattern in which opposition to impeachment was disproportionately overrepresented. Comment-based opinion generally aligned with the perceived ideological orientation of news outlets, and this polarization was particularly pronounced in the likes/dislikes metric. Among all comment authors, 53.6% were classified as pro-impeachment and 20.3% as anti-impeachment, and users opposing impeachment posted, on average, more comments across a wider range of news outlets than those supporting impeachment. Analysis of participation inequality revealed that the top 5% of commenters accounted for more than half of all comments, and the top 10% for nearly 70%, confirming that a small minority of users drove most comment activity. While commenters generally showed a strong tendency to post on ideologically aligned news outlets, approximately 30% of users were identified as “active cross-media users” who posted more frequently on ideologically incongruent outlets, indicating that comment sections did not function as purely closed echo chambers. The proportion of active cross-media users was relatively higher among pro-impeachment users, whereas the tendency to comment predominantly on ideologically congruent outlets was stronger among anti-impeachment users.
