This study originated from the researcher’s intent to answer a personal question as a ceramic sculptor, “What should I create?” From this inquiry, a new question arose, “How should I live?” This development shifted the paper’s focus beyond the ‘self’ to explore the relation between the individual and the world. The researcher came to realize the world is composed not of isolated, fixed ‘beings’, but of entities in a continual state of ‘becoming’. Throughout the paper, the researcher states that it is from interpreting what is not static but an ever-changing existence that one can find true meaning.
The researcher views the world as fundamentally cyclical and ever-changing. While these two terms may seem to juxtapose in definition, this should not be understood as independently absolute. Instead, these opposing concepts remain relative to one another, and the struggle to categorize them as absolute (along with the inevitable failure of this effort) often leads to suffering. For example, in the concepts of good and evil, disappointment and betrayal arise when someone perceived as ‘good’ fails to uphold that nature. Such ideas, often expressed in language as rigid dualisms, inherently involve interaction and change. The researcher emphasizes that opposing concepts exist in relation to each other; one cannot exist without the other, just as day transforms into night in a continuous cycle. When closely observed, concepts that appear to contrast often share many similarities. It is from this that the researcher states the world’s dualistic nature of repetition and transformation.
Eastern philosophies are primarily sourced to support the presented thesis that share the views of coexistent and transformative nature in all things. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism provide examples of cyclical, interdependent, and organic worldviews. On the other hand, while the Western philosophy of dualistic thought dominated the mainstream view of the world since the rapid rise of Western civilization, thinkers such as Heraclitus and Protagoras from ancient Greece and Nietzsche from modern Germany offer perspectives more aligned with Eastern philosophies. It is from their ideas, to deny the absolute and embrace the ever-changing nature of existence, that they are taken into consideration for this paper. Drawing from this philosophical foundation, the researcher reflects on the notion of absoluteness as a human construct, created to provide comfort and stability.
The works of Mario Merz, Anish Kapoor, Frederick J. Kiesler, and Wolfgang Laib are also examined in this study, as they similarly explore themes of change and interconnectedness. These ideas are central to the researcher’s studio practice, which involves creating units defined as ‘◯(공, 空, Emptiness)’ that are interlinked with one another in the creative process. This sculptural language, ‘◯(공, 空, Emptiness)’ is rooted in the Buddhist teaching “Emptiness is form, form is emptiness (空卽是色, 色卽是空),” which expresses how opposing concepts, ‘form (色)’ and ‘emptiness (空)’, are coexistent and interchangeable. The researcher titles the resulting body of work Tantra, a term derived from Sanskrit that broadly signifies interconnectedness, continuity, and activity. The use of this term is not intended to provide a definitive solution to the audience, but to highlight the process the researcher underwent in developing the work.
The Tantra series also explores technical experimentation with the ceramic medium, particularly clay and glaze. While these two materials seem to contrast in their use during different stages of ceramic production, they share similar material compositions. The researcher used flux, that enable materials to melt at specific temperatures, as a shared ingredient in both clay and glaze to study its effects. Experimentation revealed that flux induced a range of transformations, from the expansion, compression, and collapse of the clay body to the maintenance of glaze form integrity during firing. This process required the maker to relinquish control to the kiln as the works underwent their most critical chemical transformations. Accepting this relinquishment was essential for the researcher to continue exploring and responding to the kiln’s outcomes.
This study begins with a personal question that evolves throughout the paper, prompting the researcher to adopt a broader perspective and transform her worldview and approach to life. The initial question “What should I create?” evolves into “How should I live?”, marking a shift from a goal-oriented to a process-oriented mindset. As an artist, the researcher comes to value the creative process over the final product, an insight that extends beyond art to all aspects of human life. Through this exploration, the researcher reexamines the importance of process over outcome and reflects on the interconnected nature of existence.
