      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne’s first novel, is evaluated as a self-reflective work of his creative life and semiotic interpretation. The author wants to change his family and social traumas into autobiographical text. The characters of his first romance reveal Hawthorne’s conflicts and desires as semiotic vehicles and lead him to the status of artist. Each of the four major characters and Puritan crowd and narrator in The Scarlet Letter also reflect Derrida’s semiology and Hawthorne’s symbolism as the sources of the initial “A”. Each character shares Hawthorne’s doubleness towards Puritan society. Especially Dimmesdale is created by author’s artistic passion. Hester is transformed into apostle owing to redecoding her “A”. Hawthorne explains his artistic achievement through adapting semiological interpretation in Puritan society. The three market places also reveal the writer’s creative process of seeing, disclosing and uttering. Each setting has an unique protagonist, a symbol, a semiotic role and result, which are assembled around the shape of “A” as the meaning of Art. Hawthorne also achieves the identity of an artist in the end. Therefore, The Scarlet Letter can be evaluated as Hawthorne’s first work by showing his creation of semiological novel. And it is an “Art” itself, which sprung from Romantic environments of New England.
