창의성은 정신병리와 관련이 있는가? = Is creativity allied to psychopathology?

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 선행연구 결과들을 고찰함으로써 창의성과 정신병리와의 관련성을 알아보는데 있다. 창의적인 천재들의 정신병리적 현상에 관한 최초의 관심은 기원전 350년에 아테네의 철학자 아리스토델레스가 쓴 「Problemata」 중에서 철학, 정치학 시, 그리고 예술 분야에서 탁월한 사람들은 우울증의 경향을 가지고 있다고 기록한 것으로부터 시작되었다. 선행연구들에서는 주로 화가, 조각가, 건축가, 작가, 음악가, 배우 등의 예술가들은 비예술가들에 비해 충동성, 불안, 정서적 예민성, 적대감, 온정적이지 않음 등의 정서적 특성을 가지고 있으며, 알콜중독이나 약물남용, 정신분열증, 우울증, 양극성장애 등의 정신병리적 문제와 좀 더 많이 관련되어 있는 것으로 보고하였다. 선행연구 분석 결과 창의성과 정신병리는 서로 관련되어있으며, 창의성은 정신병리적 문제를 가진 개인이 적응을 향한 욕구와의 관계에서 역동적으로 상호작용한 결과라고 결론지었다. 그러나 선행연구들에서는 주로 소수의 예술가 집단을 대상으로 한 것이어서 결과의 일반화에는 한계가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to review the relationship between creativity and psychopathology. The relationship between creativity and psychopathology has been debated for literally hundreds of years. The relationship between creativity and psychopathology has been a source of speculation for centuries, dating back at least as far as Aristotle who suggested that all of the eminent writers and philosophers of his time suffered from melancholia. Henceforth, many studies have focused on the relationship among creativity, mood disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, suicide, short life-span, and schizophrenia. Creative individuals often are viewed as more eccentric than typical, and many of the common disturbances. And, many famous creators have suffered from mental disorder of various sorts. In conclusion, there is the dynamic interaction between creativity and psychopathology. In previous studies, however, some groups of artists were included. So there are limits to the generalization of the results.
