The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between literacy environments and reading motivation in middle school students. relationships of literacy environments and reading motivation in middle school students. The literacy environments were composed of home, school, and social aspects. Motivation for reading was composed of internal and external motivation. Internal motivation for reading has three factors including curiosity, involvement and challenge. External motivation for reading has five factors including recognitio, academic achievement, sociability, competition and conformity.
Participants of this study were 464 middle school boys and girls students selected randomly by their teachers in two middle schools in Sacheon city.
Main findings of the study were as follows:
First, home literacy environment of middle school students were different between both boys and girls and between 2nd and 3rd grader. Both school and social literacy environments showed significant interaction effects between graders and gender.
Second, reading motivation showed significant interaction effects between graders and gender.
Third, there were significant correlations between home, school and social literacy environments and internal and external motivation for reading.
Finally, correlations between literacy environments and motivatio for reading were not different between graders and gender.
