The southern United States, is too young to talk about history. But it has become one of the most historical and introspective area in the consciousness, because of his unique climate, geographical environment, religious thought, the traditional culture and historical vicissitudes etc. Especially for the extremely deep religious ideas, the south America is regarded as the "bible belt”. Christian ideas are closely linked with the strong southern sense of history, become a foundation of it's literature and culture. "Eden" in Christian mythology is a metaphor in the course of transfering from the southern traditional agricultural society to the modern industrial society. "Paradise regained” can be seen as their glorious history, “paradise lost”can be seen as the reality of their suffering. The calling of the God in the other shore is their permanent conversion. This paper begins with the religious background of the south American literature, and discusses American literature from the angle of religion and history, trying to reveal its different cultural connotations.
