Titian Vecellio (1487~1575) is considered to be the greatest artist in sixteenth century Venetian art. The earlier paintings of Titian show the remarkable influence of Giovanni Belini and Giorgione. As a pioneer of Baroque style, Titian is also a forerunner of artists in the seventeenth century such as Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt Harmensz.
Succeeding the technique of oil painting of Flanders artists, Titian established the pictorial colourism in Venice which is contrasted with the sculptural formalism in Florence. It is in the technique of expressing colour that Titian's paintings are highly appreciated.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the issue of colour in Venetian art especially through Titian's works.
