정보사회의 미디어아트 기획전 시사점 연구- 독일 ‘예술과 미디어 기술센터’(ZKM) 기획전을 중심으로 = A Study on a Media Art Exhibition in Information-oriented Society and Its Implications - Focusing on Exhibitions at the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe

A media art leader in Europe, the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe is a total cultural institution, complete with a museum, research center, library and education facilities. Its roles include presenting media art to the public in exhibitions examining diverse social phenomena regarding media-oriented societies. The writer focuses on exhibitions at the ZKM in 2015, which invited reflection on social changes brought forth by improvements in media technology. They were "International: The Information Sphere" and "The World's Control and Surveillance," and involved social and philosophical investigations of our late industrial society's IT-produced social phenomena. This study examined a cross section of information-oriented societies by analyzing these exhibitions' works, which expressed the artists' criticism for global social changes caused by information technology and media's influence on our daily lives.
While forming a discourse about information-oriented societies, which control individuals through surveillance, the exhibitions enabled me to understand our situation of being powered by information the world over. Through these exhibits at the ZKM, one can understand how our entire world lives in an information ecology, and in an information era. Also, by pointing out that those who control information also control and oppress the individual's freedom in media-oriented societies, the ZKM fulfills its public and social functions as an art museum. This study is intended to analyze an exhibition the ZKM organized to investigate what social phenomena the new media bring about and to criticize the information age. It asserts that any exhibition to raise the issues pertaining to the relation between man and media brought up by the new media is required. Meanwhile, it also tries to suggest that an art museum holding media art-related exhibitions can be a medium to carry out the social role of art.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

독일 카를스루에에 위치한 예술과 미디어 기술센터(ZKM)는 미디어아트 미술관을 주축으로 연구소, 도서관, 교육시설 등을 갖춘 문화복합기관으로 유럽 미디어아트를 이끌어 간다. ZKM 미디어아트 미술관의 역할은 예술로서 미디어아트를 선보이고 매체 사회에 관한 다양한 사회현상을 살펴볼수 있는 전시 개최에 있다. 필자는 2015년 가을에 ZKM 미디어아트 미술관에서 개최한 매체의 발달에 따른 정보화 사회의 변화를 성찰하는 전시에 주목하였다. 전시는 정보화로 인한 후기산업사회의사회현상에 대하여 사회적, 철학적으로 고찰한 《세계적 정보 영역》전과 《세계의 통제와 감시》 전이다. 본 연구는 매체의 발전에 의한 세계적 정보화현상과 사회 변화에 대해 ZKM의 기획전 작품을 분석해 정보화 사회의 단면을 살펴보았다. ZKM의 미디어사회에 관한 기획전은 전세계적으로 보편화된 정보에 의해 움직이는 시대를 이해할 수 있었고 개인에 대한 통제와 감시를 하는 정보화 사회에 대해 사회적 담론을 제기하고 있었다. 이러한 ZKM의 전시는 우리가 정보화 시대의 정보생태계에 살고 있음을 인식하게 한다. 또한 미디어 사회에서 정보를 가진 자가 개인의 자유를 억압하고통제하고 감시한다는 사실을 알림으로써 미술관의 공공적, 사회적 기능을 수행하고 있었다. 본 연구는 매체가 가져오는 사회현상에 관해 알리는 목적성을 가진 ZKM의 정보화 시대에 관해 비판하는전시를 분석하였다. 이러한 연구를 통해 뉴미디어가 가져오는 인간과 매체와의 관계에서 나오는 문제점을 나타내는 사회적 내용의 전시가 필요하다는 사실을 제시하고자 한다. 그리고 미디어아트 전시를 개최하는 미술관은 예술의 사회적 역할을 수행 할 수 있는 매개체가 될 수 있다는 사실을 밝혀보고자 한다.
