To get the natural frequencies of an automobile turbocharger wheel, impact hammer and accelerometer are usually used. But an impact hammer must be handled carefully to avoid double hit and an accelerometer chosen as light as possible not to add weight on the turbocharger. In this paper, a new vibration test method using steel ball and microphone are suggested to get the natural
frequencies of the turbocharger. The steel ball can hit the turbine wheel into arbitrary directions avoiding double hit and a microphone is free of weight increase problem. Another advantage is that the system can be cheaply set up because Adobe Audition is used for signal analyzer. So it is looking forward to adopt this system easily in automotive parts industries.
