The etiologic agents of Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Korea are Hantaan and Seoul viruses in the genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae. Serodiagnosis of HFRS among suspect HFRS hospitalized patients was made by indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique with Hantaan virus as described before because IF antibodies are group specific among hantaviruses. Seroepidemiological study of HFRS patients in South Kores from 1980 to 1987 was carried out and the results are summarized as follows. 1. About 700 HFRS patients were diagnosed serologically every year and mortality was 3-7% but it is considered that the number of patient is no more than 1/3 of actual number of pstient in the South Korea because about 95% of the patients were hospitalized patients to the hospitals in and nearby cities of Seoul. 2. HFRS patients occurred in all provinces of the country but most of the patients still prevalent in the northern parts of South Korea. In Seoul city, about 90 patients were docummented in all districts of the city every year but many patients were found especially in Kangdong-ku, Tongdaemun-ku, Tobong-ku, Sungdong-ku, Kangnam-ku and Kuro-ku. 3. There are two epidemic seasons of HFRS in Korea, a small peak in June and a large peak in the late autumn. More than 80% of the patients occurred in October, November and December. 4. HFRS patients occur mainly in the adults over age of 20 and the proportion of male patient to female patient was about 2.5 to 1. 5. The percentage of serologically diagnosed HFRS patients among clinically suspect HFRS patients was about 30% in the civilians and about 50-80% in the soldiers. The seroepidemiological survey of HFRS showed that patients occurred not only in the rural communities and also in the urban areas of large cities in South Korea. HFRS is a still big public health problern and it is estimated that there are about 2,000 cases of HFRS because this st- udy covered only one third of total population and areas of South Korea.
