This study is devoted to how and why Joseph Stalin used architecture as an instrument of soft power, both inside the country and on the international stage. Although the Stalinist regime is traditionally associated primarily with repressions and mechanisms of coercion, the work argues that for the functioning of a totalitarian system, subtler forms of emotional influence were no less significant. Architecture occupied a central place in this strategy: scale, spatial organization, symbolic language, and aesthetic harmony transformed ideology into an everyday sensory experience, shaping internal consent and strengthening the external prestige of the state.
To analyze this phenomenon, the study proposes the theoretical framework of Spatial Mediation Theory, which combines Henri Lefebvre’s concept of the social production of space, Marshall McLuhan’s media theory, Antonio Gramsci’s notion of cultural hegemony, and Lee Geun’s strategic logic of soft power. Based on discourse analysis, spatial interpretation, and the examination of key objects of Stalinist architecture (the “Seven Sisters,” the Moscow Metro, VDNKh, the Palace of Soviets project, as well as the export of Soviet monumentalism to Eastern Europe and Asia) the study demonstrates that Stalinist architecture functioned as a carefully constructed soft power strategy.
The resulting conclusion is that under a totalitarian regime, architecture functioned not only as a means of monumental propaganda, but as a political technology that translated ideology into space, emotion, and belief.
