The Four Books had not been the texts of the Confucian canon till Chu Hsi compiled and published an edition of the Four Books. Since the Yu‥an dynasty adopted Chu Hsi’s version of the Four Books as the basis for the civil service examinations in 1313-1315, the Four Books with Chu Hsi’s Commentaries on them became the most influential works and had great authority over East Asian society. On this fact many people tend to presuppose that the meaning of the Four Books was determined by Chu Hsi, and that therefore the leading Chuhsians of the Korea Chosun dynasty submitted themselves to Chu Hsi`s reading of the Four Books, lacking their own reading and interpretation of them. T`oegye Yi Hwang(1501-1570) and Yulgok YI I(1536-1584) of the sixteenth century are two of the most prominent Confucian philosopher in development of Neo-Confucianism of Ch`eng-Chu school during the Chosun period. It is a common view that Korean Neo-Confucianism own understanding and interpretation of the Four Books began in the seventeenth century. In this article the author provides us with evidences to substantiate the claim that Yi T`oegye and Yi Yulgok took their own reading and interpretation of the Four Books based on their thoughts and understanding, not following blindly Chu Hsi`s reading and commentaries. The Four Books surpassed the Five Classics in exercising influence on the educated elite in the tradition of East Asia. In reading and interpretation of the Four Books, the author maintains, Yi T`oegye and Yi Yulgok were original in their own way, though they owed much to Chu Hsi, and some to the predecessors of China or Korea. And the author focuses on his contention that a Confucian is unable to stand on his own feet in understanding and interpretation of the Confucian Classics unless he has his own thoughts in Confucian metaphysics, that is to say, a Neo-Confucian`s own understanding and interpretation of the Four Books is never separated from the Neo-Confucian`s own metaphysical system.
