This research investigates painterly practices for representing the spaces of everyday urban life encountered through walking in the city. It enriches images derived from often overlooked moments across the city with imagination, depicting the urban narrative within a cohesive frame. The study elaborates on both the formal and theoretical aspects of walking in the city, enhancing understanding of the artworks and outlining directions for future development.
The ‘city’ is identified as a daily space, shaped by capital and power. Cities, developed through advanced technology and substantial capital, enhance the convenience of our lives and provide a variety of cultural offerings. However, they also create alienation in individual labor and leisure.
'Walking’ serves as the most fundamental mode of transportation and a proactive method for exploring time and space. The act of walking, by encountering moments and spaces, fosters direct relationships with the individual, transforming walking from a mere physical act to a subjective social practice. Thus, navigating through the modern city becomes an act of actively enjoying life.
‘Everyday life’ is characterized by the repetition of daily activities, representing both the beginning and the culmination of everything. While often dismissed as trivial due to its routine nature, every start in our lives originates from the everyday. The presence of everyday life makes all aspects of society possible, and small actions can facilitate substantial changes.
The theoretical exploration of ‘city’, ‘walking’, and ‘everyday life’ in this study includes an examination of the evolution of landscape painting in Korean art, the doctrines and ideas of the Situationist International, and Henri Lefebvre’s critique of everyday life. It explores the reasons behind Korean painters’ focus on urban landscapes as they shaped their distinctive artistic visions, comprehends the principal concepts of Situationism, and identifies four practical strategies, notably the ‘drift’ in walking practices. The study also reviews Lefebvre’s arguments about the overlooked influence and significance of everyday life in scholarly research.
Through a theoretical exploration, this study deepens the understanding and articulation of the keywords ‘city’, ‘walking’, and ‘everyday’. The analysis interprets the works of Byung Il Park, Francis Alÿs, and Yong Keun Jang, focusing on their unique techniques for uncovering beauty, issues, and desires within the city’s daily life as observed through walking. Their works employ concepts such as the compression of time and space, experiences outside the routine, and a comprehensive understanding of universality.
The research explores the social meanings and transformations of familiar spaces, starting from routine experiences, and examines the significance of traversing the everyday lives of others. This initiates a theoretical exploration of the city as a fundamental space in modern everyday life, facilitating an understanding of the city’s historical and social values, and suggesting practical methodologies to understand the contemporary urban impact on everyday life.
The study not only acknowledges the artistic value of the works analyzed but also their social, historical, and personal significances. This research serves as an opportunity to perceive space beyond its visual imagery and to habitualize a multifaceted approach, thus contemplating methods to implement contemporary expressive techniques tailored to individual characteristics.
