의도된 자기 모순적 발화의 구성과 기능 = Structure and Function of Intended Self-Contradictory Utterances

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 화자가 자신의 발화를 스스로 부정하거나 모순되는 표현을 사용하는 ‘의도된 자기 모순적 발화(intended self-contradictory utterance)’의 구성 방식과 담화 기능을 화용론적 관점에서 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일상 대화, 메신저 대화, 온라인 댓글 및 게시글 등 다양한 비형식적 담화 자료를 분석 대상으로 하여, 의도된 자기 모순적 발화가 단순한 실수나 논리적 오류가 아닌 의도적인 담화 전략으로 기능함을 밝힌다. 분석 결과, 의도된 자기 모순적 발화는 선행 발화에 의해 형성된 기대를 부정하거나, 선행 발화에서 화자가 스스로 제기한 의문에 대해 답변하는 방식으로 구성된다. 화자는 이러한 발화를 통해 화자가 강조하고 싶은 정보에 초점을 부여하거나, 청자의 오해를 방지하며 정보를 보충한다. 본 연구는 어휘 연구에서 주로 논의되었던 언어의 모순성을 담화 연구에 적용하였으며, 자기 모순적 발화를 언어 사용의 오류가 아닌 대화 전략의 한 유형으로 새롭게 조명하였다는 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the structure and discourse functions of intended self-contradictory utterances-utterances in which speakers deliberately express content that contradicts their own prior statements-from a pragmatic perspective. Drawing on various forms of informal Korean discourse, including natural dialogues, messenger conversations, and online comments and posts, it demonstrates that intended self-contradictory utterances function not as errors or lapses in logic, but as intentional discourse strategies. The analysis revealed two main structural patterns: (1) negating an expectation formed by a preceding utterance, and (2) responding to a self-raised question within the same discourse turn. These utterances serve communicative functions such as emphasizing particular information and supplementing or clarifying content to prevent potential misunderstandings by the listener. This study extends the notion of linguistic contradiction-previously discussed mainly at the lexical level-into the realm of discourse analysis and reinterprets intended self-contradictory utterances not as flaws in communication, but as strategic tools employed by speakers to manage meaning and interaction in conversation.
