This paper explores the recurring imagery of confinement in the fiction of Oh Jung-hee. Her female characters are often placed in narrow, enclosed spaces and suffer from anxiety and frustration stemming from their awareness of being trapped. In The Yard of Childhood and The Woman at the Toy Store, the child narrators witness the confinement of female others and, through this experience, come to a gendered awareness that marks their entry into the adult world. Chinatown Street traces how the female body becomes gendered and subjected to control, revealing the structural dynamics that render the body itself a site of oppression. In contrast, The Old Well follows a middle-aged woman disillusioned with life as she confronts her desire to escape and begins to recover repressed memories.
Across these works, recurring images of entrapment and restraint sensuously evoke the oppressive structures and internal conflicts that shape female experience. In Oh Jung-hee’s fiction, confinement is not merely a matter of physical restriction-it takes on existential and symbolic dimensions, functioning as a key mechanism in the formation of female subjectivity.
