지방대학 학생들의 학교생활유지에 영향을 미치는 요소 연구 = Key Factors Affecting Student Retention in Local Colleges

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This qualitative study was designed to investigated and further understand key factors affecting student retention in local universities. Twenty college students, all enrolled in public or private universities, participated in semi-structured interviews. This study found four key factors affecting students' campus life. Within the relational sphere, students were satisfied with their campus life by building and expanding the network. Within educational sphere, students who developed positive relationship with faculty members had more academic achievement motivation. However, students who had negative relationship with their faculty members tended to be less satisfied with their school. Within psychological sphere, low psychological well-being caused by their college choice and their aptitude leaded to dissatisfaction with campus life. External environments sphere, students who commuted to school or faced financial difficulties were less likely to stay in their school. However, students are more likely to remain in their school by recognizing social expectations of people in Korean society. This knowledge can be helpful as a reference for educators and college administrators who are willing to develop successful retention programs.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 질적연구는 지방대 학생들의 학교생활 만족도를 깊이 있게 탐색함으로써, 학생들의 학교생활 유지에 긍정적 또는 부정적으로 영향을 미치는 요소들을 이해하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 20명의 재학생들이 참여했으며 심층면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 또한 연구자는 면담 자료들을 분석하기 위해서 영역분석(domain analysis)방법을 사용하였으며, 분석과정을 통해 학생들의 학교생활 유지에 영향을 미치는 4가지 요소(관계적 요소, 교육적 요소, 정서적 요소, 외부환경요소)를 이끌어냈다. 관계적 요소에서, 타인들과 끊임없이 관계를 형성하고 확장하는 학생들은 학교생활만족도가 높은 반면, 그런 활동이 제한을 받을 때에는 만족도가 낮거나 학교를 휴학하려는 경향이 강했다. 교육적 요소에서, 교수와 긍정적인 관계로 친밀감이 형성될 때 학업성취동기가 높아진 반면, 교수와의 관계가 불만족스러울 경우 교육만족도가 낮았다. 또한 교육적 편의를 위해 시행되는 학교행정제도가 학생들의 의견을 반영하지 못했을 때에도 낮은 교육만족도를 보였다. 정서적 요소에서, 어쩔 수 없이 학교나 학과를 선택한 학생들이나, 또는 적성에 대한 의구심으로 심리적 불안감을 경험한 학생들은 학교생활 지속에 관한 내적갈등을 겪고 있었고, 낮은 학업성취동기로 인해 학업을 중단하고자 하는 영향이 강했다. 외적환경 요소에서, 적절하지 못한 통학거리, 재정압박은 학생들의 학교생활 유지에 부정적 영향을 끼치는 반면, 사회적 기대치 자각은 학교생활 유지에 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤다. 이 연구 결과는, 학교 행정가들이 학생들을 위한 다양한 리텐션 프로그램을 개발하는데 필요한 기초자료를 제공하였다는데 의의가 있다.
