      The purpose of this study is to understand students` use of educational media in a distance university focusing on why students use(or disuse) it and how they use it by employing grounded theory. To collect data, the researchers did semi-structured interviews with 12 students selected based on their experience in a distance university, grade, study area, and willingness to participate in the study. The data analysis was conducted through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. This study found that as adults with various roles, the students think efficient time management is critical for their study and develop their own ways of studying with educational media. They review and select the contents of the educational media, and adjust their use of the educational media to their lives rather than studying with all the provided educational media step by step as the developers planned. They adjust their study period and time, and use two ways of studying with the educational media complementarily. In deciding what and how to use the educational media, students consider various factors including the features of the contents and technology, and their individual environment and ability. In terms of contents, students emphasize the usefulness, the effect on the evaluation, and the attractiveness of the contents. Regarding the features of the technology, students propose that time flexibility, space flexibility and functions for convenient usage of the technology are important. In addition, students` priority of study in their various roles, their approaches to learning, and their life situation to access each media, and their ability to use them affect students` use of the educational media. Based on the results, this study suggest that the developers should help students create their own ways to use the educational media rather than insisting students follow the developers` plan.
