Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the development experience of an AI-based physical activity program and to explore the educational implications embedded in the development process.
Methods: The program was developed based on a deliberative curriculum development model. Data were collected from the researcher’s recollective memory data, official documents, records related to the program development process, messages and notes generated during consultations, and relevant literature. Data analysis involved case description, inductive category analysis, and longitudinal coding. The trustworthiness of the study was ensured through triangulation, member checking, and expert consultation.
Results: The experience of developing the AI-based physical activity program was categorized into three stages: platform: recognizing the need for physical activity, deliberation: collaboratively envisioning AI-based physical activity, and design: the emergence of the AI Body-Filling Project. In the platform stage, program developers analyzed the school context, reviewed previous field research cases, and identified implications, which led to recognizing the lack of and need for physical activity.
In the deliberation stage, various alternatives were explored through discussion, including topic selection, conceptualization, and the articulation of program objectives. In the design stage, curriculum organization and implementation tasks were developed based on national and local policies for promoting school physical education.
Conclusion: Through developing an AI-based physical activity program, the researcher gained insight into the cultural characteristics of the school and its stakeholders and recognized prevailing perceptions toward AI and physical activity.
Policy and academic support are needed to facilitate their effective integration in school education.
