It has been understood that ‘Sop’ is the mark of ‘object honorific’ or ‘speaker·subject modesty’. This study, however, defined it as the mark of ‘speaker modesty.’ It was based on the belief that we came to the most reasonable conclusion when understanding ‘sop’ focusing on ‘the speaker.’
To prove it we suggested that we define ‘sop’ as the mark of ‘modesty’ and then focus on the ‘speaker’ instead of ‘object.’ The reason is that we observed ‘sop’ is used for ‘listener’ as well as ‘object,’ and also appears in the case hard to assume the object; as a result, we came to think the consistent and concise description is possible when focusing on the speaker, whereas we are not able to explain some other examples when focusing on the object like the existing point of view.
Through the above demonstration, this study defined ‘sop’ as the mark of ‘speaker modesty’, proved that we could give a natural explanation for the examples not covered by the previous viewpoint, and emphasized again that we came to the most reasonable conclusion when understanding ‘sop’ from the speaker-centered perspective.(Chonnam National University)
