This study was intended to investigate the effect of negative emotional valence on false memories of the aged using DRM paradigm, based on previous research that emotional valence facilitated the true memories but had no influences on false memories of the young. Especially, in consideration of the positivity effect of the aged and negativity effect of the young, we used words which have negative emotional valence.
Considering the age of the research participants, the length of Experiment 1 was shortened significantly compared to Park et al.(2004). Recall and recognition test were conducted after studying 6 lists of words.. Among those, half of the items were consisted of words associated with emotionally charged critical lures and the rest of them with non-emotional ones.
The results showed that the performance on both tests did not show significant difference for the two age groups in accordance to the emotionality of the material. In other words, the assumption that negative emotional valence will affect false(true) memory of the young and the aged differently did not prove to be as prominent as it was expected.
However this result could have been due to the ceiling effect, based on the fact that the overall performance of the young on the recognition test was very high and only minor difference was observed between the two groups. Therefore we conducted Experiment 2 to test this assumption and also to verify if the insufficiency of emotional valence for the material might be to blame for the lack of age differences.
Experiment 2 was expanded to a total of 80 study trials and 160 test trials to eliminate the ceiling effect. Using similar procedure, only the recognition test was given to both age groups. The pattern of the performance was analogous to Experiment 1, showing that the effect of negative emotional valence did not have differential effect on false and true memory. This indicates that the material we used did not carry enough emotional valence.
Failing to acquire the effect of negative emotion on false memory drove us to look at two issues in the research. First, we have discussed the possibility that unlike the words, pictures which present emotional content more vividly could have brought upon clearer(significant) patterns of differential memory performance for two age groups. Secondly, the effect of emotion on memory does not always present for the young vs. the aged in different direction.
