Many current digital archive exhibitions don’t actively provide spaces where visitors can express their opinions. Digital archive exhibitions need to bring people together and combine all values, beyond simply providing contents. A digital archive exhibition should be a platform. The goal of this study is for activating exhibitions of digital archive platforms. For this goal, activation of storytelling by visitors needs to be considered. This study asked the following questions : ‘What is the role and necessity of digital archive platform exhibition?’, ‘What is the role of storytelling in current digital archives and how should it be realized?’, ‘Which direction should digital archive platform exhibitions take?’. To resolve this, this study examined preceding studies about ‘digital archive platforms’, ‘types and structures of storytelling’, ‘education in archives’ and ‘relationships between digital communication and education’. Research methods are literature review and case analysis. Three theories were examined through literature review, which are George E. Hein’s constructive museum, Jürgen Habermas’s public sphere and Umberto Eco’s semiotics. These theories were applied to set criteria for analysis of current digital archive platform exhibition. Subjects of this analysis are ‘Open archive’ of Korea democracy foundation, ‘E museum’ of National museum of Korea, ‘The national archives’ of UK and ‘Arts & culture’ of Google. Analytical Criteria are ‘Number of contents’, ‘User participation’, ‘Education’, ‘Type of storytelling’, ‘Structure of storytelling’ and ‘Web accessibility’. ‘Arts & culture’ has the most contents. All four platforms have functions that users can participate in. ‘Open archive’, ‘The national archives’ and ‘Arts & culture’ use narrative storytelling, visual storytelling and kinetic storytelling. On the other hand, ‘E museum’ doesn’t use kinetic storytelling. None of the platforms use object-oriented storytelling. Web accessibility was evaluated by AChecker. WCAG 2.0 (Level AA) was applied as a basis of evaluation. ‘Open archive’ and ‘Arts & culture’ need to make up for their web accessibility. Digital archive exhibition platforms should be an open web space for culture education of citizen. They should endeavor to active applications of exhibition articles as art culture resources. They should promote development of digital exhibition contents and globalization of Korean culture art.
