This dissertation is aimed at verifying correlative influences of the one-person creative business entrepreneur's characteristics and network activity on business performances through regression analyses. Additionally, it verifies significant attributes of one-person creative businesses. This study is, so to speak, to focus on crucial factors that influence business performances of one-person creative businesses. These factors are the entrepreneur's characteristics and their's external network action.
Even though many studies have verified that entrepreneur's characteristics influence the management outcomes of businesses, they mostly focus on psychological characteristic factors. Therefore, this study is to verify how entrepreneur’s characteristics influence business performances of businesses based on not only psychological factors, but also behavioral ones using DISC behavior patterns.
The followings are the verification process of this research.
First, entrepreneur's characteristics have been analyzed by the DiSC behavior patterns and entrepreneur's background attributes. The DiSC Behavior patterns consist of four different types of behavior patterns, which are Dominance(D), Influence(I), Steadiness(S), and Conscientiousness(C). On the other hand, entrepreneur's background attributes include business readiness, personal ability, planning and evaluation.
Second, this study has analyzed how network activities influence business performances according to strength, diversity and size of network ties.
Third, business performances are evaluated by the Balanced Score Card(BSC). Since the one-person creative businesses have recently been launched type of businesses, the potential growth and improvement of business outcome is considered to be more important than current performances.
The research results are listed below.
First, according to DISC behavior patterns, entrepreneurs who are classified as Dominance(D) type show to be stronger in the field of securing customers and markets. Entrepreneurs classified as Influence(I) type appear to be stronger in the field of internal processes. Entrepreneurs classified as Conscientiousness(C) type demonstrate acumen of customer and financial perspectives in business performances. As a result, the most appropriate type for the one-person creative businesses is found to be Conscientiousness(C) type.
Second, while network characteristic analysis according to DISC behavior patterns shows that Conscientiousness(C) type influences network strength, Dominance(D) type influences the diversity of network ties. What these results mean is that Conscientiousness(C) type is better at constructing relationship than expanding network, whereas Dominance (D) type is better at interchanging and expanding various ties.
Third, business readiness in terms of background characteristics and business performances has a significant influence on customer perspective, while ‘planning and evaluation’ factors, which plan and evaluate periodically, significantly influence customer and financial perspectives. Therefore, that proves that ‘business readiness’ and ‘planning and evaluation’ factors are background characteristics of entrepreneurs. Also, in terms of background characteristics of entrepreneurs and network activities, business readiness meaningfully influence the strength and diversity of network ties, whereas ‘planning and evaluation’ factor influences all network factors such as the strength, diversity, and size of network ties. Thus, business readiness like professional consultation or self-improvement and elaborate planning and evaluation result in remarkable outcomes from network activities.
Fourth, this study finds out that the strength of network ties positively influences customer, finance, and process perspectives by examining direct effects on business performances of network characteristics. On the contrary, the diversity and size of network ties rarely have a significant effect on business performances.
Fifth, according to analysis about mediating effect of network characteristics using hierarchical regression analysis recommended by Baron & Kenny(1986), there is no mediating effect between DISC behavior patterns and business performances. Whereas there is perfect mediating effect between entrepreneur's background attributes and business performances in the mediating effect of network characteristics.
These findings listed above will definitely provide some significant suggestions for the entrepreneurs since they haven't had successful models for one-person creative businesses even though those businesses have dramatically increased.
First of all, one-person creative businesses are encouraged to join in various network activities which lead to obtaining more resources from external network and result in better business performances.
Second, timely and appropriate policy and training programs are crucial to discover and nurture one-person creative businesses. Fortunately, the study finds out that elaborate and analytic business readiness, planning and evaluation are required for one-person creative business entrepreneur's characteristics and behavior patterns. Creativity as well as elaborate planning and performance is also considered to be one of the most appropriate qualities in the creative economy age.
Third, one of the most common cause of failures for start-up business is lack of preparation. In this respect, one-person creative business entrepreneurs are advised to have professional consultation along with enough preparation, elaborate planning and evaluation before they start up new businesses since this study has already shown that entrepreneur's background characteristics like business readiness, planning and evaluation influence directly business performances. Besides, appropriate policies should back up such considerations.
