      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Byung-Ok KimEliot's early poems are evaluated to reflect his concept of the "immediate experience." Following Cassirer I examine how Eliot describes this concept in his early poems. This essay consists of four parts. The first part is a brief introduction to both Eliot's and Cassirer's notion of the immediate experience which refers to primitive experience. In the second part I attempt to find in Cassirer a key to understanding Eliot's concept of the "immediate experience". Cassirer says that poets include consciously or unconsciously events of primitive mentality in the form of immediate experience. In the third part I attempt to perform two tasks: first, to find epistemological parallels in Eliot's early poems with Cassirer; second, to disclose how Eliot creates rhetorical strategy in the name of immediate experience. The fourth is the conclusion. I touch slightly on Cassirer's academic learning and then reveal how Eliot's rhetoric differs from the general trend of the 20th century poetry which pursues immediate experience or visual immediacy.
