인터넷 지도와 백과사전을 통해 바라본 우리나라 국토지리정보 - 동해와 독도 관련 이슈를 사례로- = Korean Geographic Informations in Wikipedia and Web Mapping Services - In Case of East Sea and Dokdo -

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There are many geographical and geopolitical issues regarding South Korea spatial delimitation,including Dok-do Island and the East sea area. Online digital maps such as Google Earth or MS Virtual Earth, whichare the most widely used internet world map engines, are one of the easiest way to inform about this kinds of issuesand provide objective information that can be the basis of judgment. However, provided geographic informationabout South Korea through internet mapping services, digital atlases or encyclopedia service are limited andinaccurate. In this article, we speculate wikipedia(online encyclopedia which is collective intelligent driven) and GoogleEarth(Online visual geographic information service) and particular aspect of geographic name of East Sea and Dok-do, and especially on their neutral standpoint about disputed area on earth. At the bottom of article there is effectiveand efficient ways of delivering our country’s geographic informations in the age of internet.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

독도, 동해를 비롯해 우리나라와 관련하여 다수의 지리적 논란이 일고 있다. 현재 전세계인들이 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 세계지도라 할 수 있는 구글어스(구글맵)나 MS Virtual Earth와 같은 온라인 전자지도 등은 가장 쉽게 이러한 갈등에 관한 문제를 알리고 올바른 판단의 근거가 되는 객관적인 정보를 제공할 수 있는 통로가 될 수 있으나 이러한 온라인 지도 서비스나 백과사전 서비스를 통해 제공되는 우리나라에 관한 지리정보는 전반적으로 매우 빈약하고 부정확한
것이 현실이다. 본 연구는 보편적인 정보 창구가 되어버린 인터넷을 통해 지리공간정보를 얻을 수 있는 대표적인 수단이라 할 수 있는 인터넷지도서비스인 구글어스와 인터넷백과사전인 위키피디아를 살펴보고 각각의 서비스에서 우리나라의 지리정보 제공 현황, 특히 독도와 동해의 지명과 관련하여 제공되는 정보의 특성을 살펴보았다. 또한 국제적 분쟁지역에 대해 이러한 인터넷 서비스들이 독자적이고 중립적인 지리정보 제공에 있어 어떠한 방법을 택하고 있는지 파악함으로써 독도와 동해 지명 등의 문제와 관련하여 국경과 문화적 경계가 불분명한 인터넷 공간에서 우리의 주장을 설득력
있게 제공하기 위한 기본적인 지침과 학계와 정부 차원에서 대응할 수 있는 구체적인 방안 제시를 목적으로 한다.
