20세기 후기 이후의 ‘빛 + 공간 ’ 예술에 관한 연구 = A Study of ‘Light + Space’ Arts Since Later 20th Century

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 1960년대 이후 미국 서부에서 학제 간의 도움을 통해 이룩한 빛과 공간이 어우러진 미학의 연구에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 제임스 터렐을 비롯한 10여 명의 작가들은 플랙시 글라스, 플라스틱, 레진, 파라볼빅 렌즈 등과 같은 첨단 소재들로 조형물을 제작하거나 설치, 대지미술과의 조화를 꾀하기도 한다. 특히, 단 플래빈의 작품들은 나열형 발광체가 부여하는 파노라마와도 같은 미묘한 공간의 탈바꿈을 통해서 예상하지 못한 압도적인 환경적 요인을 담은 미학을 이룬다. 한편, 로버트 어윈의 예술은 실내 환경의 전환을 위해, 반투명 소재를 투과한 절제된 빛의 신비를 통해서, 일상을 초월한 숭고의 세계로 인도하는 느낌을 제공한다. 또한, 올라퍼 엘리아슨의 프로젝트들은 스패닝 시네마, LED, 물, 공기, 온도를 포함하여 경쾌한 색채들, 투명하거나 반투명 효과, 미묘함과 상상력이 어우러진 환경연출 및 그 외의 미묘한 소재들을 사용하여 색다른 공간을 창출하는데, 거대한 규모의 공간에서 색채의 환희를 제공하는 빛의 예술로 나아간다. 이러한 작품들은 일시적으로 일상의 테두리에서 벗어나 마법의 세계 혹은 초월적인 동화의 세계 속으로 관객들을 인도한다. 나아가, 그들은 색채와 공간의 마술로서 거대한 건축물이나 자연환경 자체가 미적인 공간으로 전환하게 하여, 대중들에게 흥분의 도가니로 가득한 환상의 미학을 체험하게 하는 색다른 장르의 예술이 된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this thesis is to study the aesthetics of harmonizing Light and Space those are achieved by the support of since 1960s’ interdisciplinary research in western US. James Turrell and dozen artists use plexiglass, plastic, resin, parabolic lens and other apex materials to create three dimensional art works or harmonize them with installation or land art. Especially, Dan Flavin’s art achieves panorama-like subtle aesthetics which contains unexpected situation of environmental event through arrangement of luminous bodies giving space metamorphosis. Meanwhile, Robert Irwin’s art gives us the feeling to lead transcendental sublime world from the mystery of restricted dimly light effect through semi-transparent cloths. And, Olafur Eliason’s project moves to create the fantastic space of color paradise, which is from the transparent, semi-transparent effect of environment by subtle elements: such as Spanning Cinema, LED, water, and air temperature to create delightment from magnificent scale light art. All of these art works let spectators going out from daily life boundary temporarily and lead them to the world of magic or the that of transcendental fairy. Furthermore, they are the magic of color and space to metamorphose the architecture or environment into artistic spaces; and become unusual genre of art for the mass people to experience full of excitement of the aesthetics of fantasy.
