Research on creative education for improving quality of life is being continuously achieved in the present society. Art education enables maximum increase of human potential and derives inner emotions of students.
As comprehension-oriented art education gained attention in Korea from the latter part of the 1970s, the fostering of critical thinking is being emphasized for students to properly understand and judge art within transforming environment.
Comprehension-oriented art education provides a wider view for possessing not only the domain regarding creation emphasized in art education but also cultures such as emotion education, society-centered art education, and multi-culture art education. Thus, art education is being activated not only within school but also outside school.
Art gallery education is being raised as a new domain of art education within the flow of society, and the social and educational functions of art gallery are being more emphasized along with 5-day class and expansion of creative experience learning domain within academic curriculum. It can be known that the 7th art major curriculum mentions 'guiding students to view museum, art gallery, and exhibition center at least once a semester'.
This clarifies the importance of museum and art gallery field trip and the significance of connection in art education. However, specific course programs or measures related to this are not provided in educational sites or in textbooks, thus only being achieved in only a small number of schools. In this regard, the function of 'education' is being gradually emphasized in art gallery, which is closely related to art education, along with the flow of this age, making changes in art gallery education inevitable.
This study started out with the search for effective art education methods related to museum education by shedding new light on current middle school art education within such social and educational flow. Furthermore, the present condition of art gallery educational program in Korea and abroad has been researched based on various specialty publications, precedent essays, visit survey, internet data search, and interviews related to this topic. Moreover, problems and improvement measures of programs connected to art gallery and school art education can be organized based on data gained from survey as the following.
First, the installation of education department composed of specialized labor force managing educational duties of art gallery is required. There are not many cases focused on researching and developing art gallery education programs as many art galleries in Korea lack educators. The installation of a more organized and efficient management system is required through speedy installation of educational department composed of specialized labor force that manage educational duties, and art gallery is required to be recognized as new cultural space for sensitive, wandering adolescents through the development of program based on middle and high school students.
Second, national efforts regarding connection between school and art gallery education are required through construction of cooperative relations between the managers and policy decision-makers of Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development. It is important to achieve close cooperation and connection system between the educational manager of art gallery and school teachers, and the school is required to acquire sufficient learning in advance instead of delegating classes to the art gallery. Furthermore, in order to complement the timely limitation of art class, realistic measures of using potential educational time, such as school discretionary activities or specialty aptitude, as art gallery class are required to be searched.
Third, active PR of art gallery education program is required. Various PR measures need to be provided by art gallery education manager through active PR strategy through teachers, school parents, and media and data construction of art gallery homepage. Training program that invites the school principal, who is responsible for school management, can be a good method for direct PR of art gallery for the school to recognize art gallery as a more educational place and deliver educational purpose.
In this regard, activation measures of art gallery and school art education have been presented to suggest 3 round learning guidance plan of art gallery-school connected educational program for high school freshmen based on the activation measures above.
This study presents the necessity of inter-cooperative and active attitude between art gallery, government, school, parents, and students for achieving art gallery-school connected program in addition to individual efforts. Furthermore, the necessity of diverse development regarding adolescent art education program, which is being alienated in comparison to art education for children and adults, has been realized through research. The foothold for fostering self-leading learning ability and creative talent pursued by Korean education will be provided through activation of connected education between school and museum. The significance of this thesis lies in this aspect, and the suggestion of improved systematic content and curriculum related to art gallery course is expected to be developed in Korean art textbook.
