It can be said that the title of Hojoki and the writer’s autograph as ‘Buddhist monk Renin’ at its end form an important key to its reading. In addition, attention should also be paid to ‘Sangmun’ written above ‘Renin’ in autographing Hojoki. Sangmun refers to sarumana in Sanskrit, which means a Buddhist monk devoting himself to Buddhism. A Buddhist monk deliberately adds this kind of expression above the Buddhist name only if he tries to insist on something by putting emphasis on his Buddhist position; he never puts the term in any personal letter or simple essay. Therefore, it is inevitable to put stress on the meanings of the autograph at the end of Hojoki. This should be given consideration in reading the work.
In essence, Hojoki was written by Renin, not by Kamonochome. It is impossible to get a correct understanding of this work without the basic awareness that the work was written by a Buddhist, Renin, in that the writer autographed it as Sangmun Renin, not as Renin, with confidence. Still, the majority of researchers discussing Hojoki have neglected or ignored this autograph and regarded the writer as harassed by earthly passions, treating the work as the same type of essay as Makurasosi or Turedurekusa. The Romanticists getting out of classicism and initiating Japanese modern literature at the 20s of the Meiji Period made this undesirable type of classics interpretation in an extremely personal and emotional stream of reflecting romantic aesthetic senses in a sense of nihilism for recluses or pessimism about transience. Efforts should be made to represent the work as it was through objective illumination from the beginning of classical studies.
