This study investigates the aesthetic representation of social tragedy in twentieth-century piano music, focusing on works by Frederic Rzewski, Dmitri Shostakovich and Leoš Janáček. Amid wars, totalitarian regimes and national conflicts, twentieth-century artists confronted the collapse of humanistic ideals, prompting a transformation of musical language. Within this context, the piano—a solitary and introspective instrument—emerged as a medium capable of expressing inner emotion, trauma and personal memory more directly than large-scale vocal or orchestral genres.
Rzewski’s ≪The People United Will Never Be Defeated!≫(1975) embodies musical activism and political participation through its 36 variations organized in a 6×6 structure. Through extended techniques, percussive gestures, improvisatory elements and cumulative rhythmic energy, the work transforms a Chilean protest song into a narrative of collective resistance, reinterpreted through the intimate voice of the piano.
Shostakovich’s Piano Sonata No. 2, Op. 61 reveals the tension between the external demands of Socialist Realism and the composer’s inner truth. Through fragmented motives, unstable tonal centers, disrupted formal returns and an unsettled ending, the sonata exhibits a double-voiced musical language that reflects the psychological and historical turmoil of wartime Soviet society.
Janáček’s Piano Sonata ≪1. X. 1905≫ transforms a historical tragedy—the death of a young demonstrator during a national protest—into a deeply personal musical expression. Utilizing speech-melody, asymmetric rhythms, narrow melodic cells and an incomplete formal design, the work embodies both the ethical stance of the composer and the intimate process of mourning.
By integrating sociological, aesthetic and trauma-theoretical perspectives, this study demonstrates that piano music serves as a site where social tragedies are internalized, reimagined and ethicalized through individual expression. Ultimately, the study proposes that artists, as observers and agents of society, bear a responsibility to respond to collective suffering and that piano music can function as a medium for memory, reflection and the reclamation of human dignity.
