In oriental medicine most favorable crude drug for hepatic diseases usually is Bupleuri Radix(Bupleurum falcatum L.). The possible protective effect of this oriental herb an hepatotoxicity induced with benzo(a)pyrene(B(a)P) was examined in primary cultured hepatocytes. In MTT[3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay water extract revealed best recovery effect compared to methanol and Chloroform-methanol extract. B(a)P-treated group had significantly increased AST(aspartate aminotransferase) and ALT(alanine aminotransferase) activities in comparison to normal group. Favorable results of this in vitro experiments indicate that Bupleuri Radix can be considered as a good therapeutic agent for the treatment of hepatic injury.
