Phonics를 적용한 읽기수업이 초등학생 영어 읽기 능력에 미치는 영향

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 초등 영어 교육에서 Phonics를 적용한 수업을 통해 초등학교 6학년 학생들
의 읽기 능력과 정의적 특성 향상에 어떤 차이를 가져오는가를 알아보는데 그 목적이
있다. 이를 위해 2005년 2월부터 10월에 걸쳐 초등학교 6학년을 대상으로 실험 집단은
전 차시에 걸쳐 Phonics를 적용한 수업을 실시하였고, 비교 집단은 교육과정에 제시된
교과서의 내용을 중심으로 수업을 전개했다. 실험 집단은 각 단원에 제시된 새로운 단
어들의 Phonics 원리를 배웠으며, 이와 관련된 게임과 활동 위주의 수업이 진행되었다.
실험 이후 실험집단과 비교 집단을 대상으로 음소 인식 평가와 읽기 능력 평가를 실시
하였고, 정의적 영역에 대한 영향을 알아보기 위해 흥미도, 자신감, 만족도 검사를 실시
하였다. 이 같은 과정을 통해 초등학교 영어 학습자, 특히 6학년들에게서도 Phonics 수
업을 통한 음소 인식 능력 향상이 읽기 능력 향상과 연관되는 것으로 드러났다. 정의적
영역에서도 Phonics를 통한 수업이 학생들의 영어에 대한 자신감, 만족도, 흥미를 높임
이 밝혀졌다. 따라서 학생들의 읽기 능력을 증진시킬 수 있는 다양한 방법와 읽기 교
수 • 학습 방법에 대한 연구가 이루어져야 할 것을 제안하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Phonics on
teaching English reading skills to the elementary school students. This study
was conducted for nine months from February to October 2005and seventy
6th graders in an elementary school participated in this study. The English
classes for the experimental group were conducted with phonics
incorporated for reading and the classes for the control group were
conducted according to the general elementary English class procedure. The
result of this study showed that significantly higher scores on the reading
and phonemic awareness test were obtained in the experimental group.
Also, the students in the experimental group have improved better than
those in the control group in affective and psychomotor domains. The
phonics method should be considered as a way of teaching reading not
only for young learners, like K-3, but also for older children, like the fifth
and six graders when they learn to read English words and sentences.
