Why should we lead a just life? Plato thinks that just life is choice-worthy for its consequences as well, but far more importantly, it is choice-worthy for its own sake. But he doesn’t think that it is a moral duty to lead a just life. It is choice-worthy for its own sake because it is good and profitable for its own sake.
But if Plato’s idea that justice and just life is good for its own sake implies that just actions too are good for their own sake, his view would be highly unrealistic. In Plato’s view, what is good is what we want to have and enjoy. So, to say that just actions are good for their own sake is to say that we enjoy them for their own sake. But most people do not enjoy just actions for their own sake; they do just actions only because otherwise they will be punished or they find those actions moral duties. Thus, if Plato’s answer to the question “why should we do just actions?” is that they are enjoyable for their own sake, his answer would be simply in vain.
Plato does not try to persuade people who are reluctant to do just actions into doing them by saying, “What you are reluctant to do is actually enjoyable to you, although you do not know that.” What he is saying is, “Even if no physical profit comes from what you are reluctant to do, that action is worth
