The purpose of this study was to validate the effectiveness of Problem-based Learning (PBL) in communicating educational goals through actual course practices. In order to accomplish this task, analysis was carried out on an implemented curriculum model and its actual operational practices. Result analysis also led to several suggested improvements. Main facets of analysis centered on course implementation and content and course assessment.
Employing both on line and in-class instructional practices of e-blended PBL lessons, study findings highlighted several important features needed for development and operation of similar courses. They were as follows:
1) At the lesson design phase, a manual on fruitful use of the online learning environment must be set.
2) For effectual PBL learning and teaching, there needs to be improvement to the actual offline environment.
3) Class sizes must be reduced.
4) Metadata training must be a prerequisite for PBL teaching and learning.
The recommendations presented in this paper are not only applicable to the development and operation of the course Presentation and Discussion at Sookmyung Women’s University, they are essential for all communication education courses presently being offered at other higher educational institutions in South Korea because domestically the courses are highly comparable. Therefore, the aforementioned suggestions could be constructive approaches in the development of model communication education courses that feature PBL syllabi.
