온라인 커뮤니티의 상호작용 의례 = 자전거 커뮤니티 사례를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 랜들 콜린스와 어빙 고프먼의 “상호작용 의례” 이론을 빌려와 온라인 자전거 커뮤니티에서 이루어지는 대화를 분석하고 이를 통해 구성되는 결사의 특성을 밝히고자 했다. 온라인 자전거 커뮤니티는 구성원들이 자전거라는 ‘신성한 대상’을 중심으로 유대하고 정서적 에너지를 고양시키는 결사라고 할 수 있다. 커뮤니티 구성원들은 반복적인 의례행위, 관심대상, 기분 등을 공유함으로써, 공통의 상징과 정서와 규범을 만들어간다. 이러한 의례 과정은 회원들이 존대와 처신, 수습절차 등의 의례 규칙들을 협력적으로 표현하고 수행함으로써 이루어진다. 이를 통해 회원들은 자신과 타인들의 언행을 조절하고 문제에 대처해 나간다. 자전거 온라인 커뮤니티 내부에는 자전거와 비자전거, 온라인과 오프라인, 결사내부와 결사외부가 공존한다. 온라인 커뮤니티는 이와 같은 ‘이질적인 것들의 공존’을 해석하고 조절하는 노력 속에서 유지된다. 때로는 이 과정에서 격렬한 감정적 논쟁, 즉, ‘플레이밍’이 야기되고 이는 커뮤니티의 유대와 정서적 에너지를 약화시키는 결과를 가져온다. 이때 회원들은 협력적 작업을 통해 다양한 도덕적 표준들을 확인하고 제안하며 내부의 의례균형을 회복하고 위기를 극복하려 한다. 이 연구는 한 평범한 온라인 커뮤니티의 상호작용 의례를 분석하면서 온라인 상호작용에 대한 비관론과 낙관론 모두를 지양하고자 했다. 온라인 커뮤니티의 회원들은 무수한 실패와 반복되는 위기 속에서도, 때로는 일상적으로, 때로는 긴급하게, 지속적인 대화와 협력의 상호작용 의례를 통해, 자신들이 속한 결사를 유익하고, 즐겁고, 동시에 도덕적으로 정당한 결사로 구성해간다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

By resorting to the theory of “interaction ritual” suggested by Randall Collins and Erving Goffman, this study analyzed the conversations within online bicycle community. Online bicycle community is an association that forms solidarity and enhances emotional energy centering around the bicycle as “the sacred object”. The members of online bicycle community share ritual actions, interests, and mood and, thus, produce common symbols, emotions, and norms that contribute to the legitimate and effective construction of the community. These ritual interactions are activated by collaborative efforts of the members following the rules of deference, demeanor, and corrective process, which manage the speech-act of the self and others and cope with the problems. Inside the community there are dialectics between bicycle and non-bicycle, online and off-line, and inside and outside of which co-existence must be interpreted and regulated by the members in order for the community to sustain. More often than not, intense quarrels called ‘flaming’ take place weakening the solidarity and emotional energies among the members. Then the members deal with the crisis collaboratively suggesting and confirming moral standards to the members to restore the ritual balance. This study avoids both pessimism and optimism about the online community. The members of the community, despite the numerous failures and repetitive crises, both regularly and irregularly, through engaging with ongoing interaction rituals of conversations and collaborations, strive to manage their community as a useful, pleasant, and moral.
