      This thesis is a historical and philosophical study introducing Waterink`s biography and systematically analyzing his educational philosophy. Jan Waterink was a well known Reformed Christian educationist in Christian academic community and schools in Netherlands during the first half of the previous century. He made an attempt to set up a Reformed pedagogy by means of both the Reformed theological tradition and modern empirical research in education from a Reformed world view. He regarded Christian children as Covenant children, who had to be brought up pious Christians serving Him in the threefold ministries(king, priest, prophet). The cause of nurture comes from the place and authority of the parents endowed by God. Waterink stressed a multi-dimensional education for children`s personality development and character formation on the basis of developmental principles. Religious education was considered as the foundation and basic principle for every educational attempt. His educational thought has been recognized as a modern model of the Reformed pedagogy. However, some Reformed scholars criticized Waterink for not being fully Reformational because he positively accepted human developmental principles and modern research methods without thorough Reformed theological and philosophical reviews, as well as for reducing education to parents` nurture at home. Notwithstanding, his ideas should be evaluated from his contemporary context and limitations. His educational theory elucidates what academic tasks we have in Korean Christian education context.

      This thesis is a historical and philosophical study introducing Waterink`s biography and systematically analyzing his educational philosophy. Jan Waterink was a well known Reformed Christian educationist in Christian academic community and schools in Netherlands during the first half of the previous century. He made an attempt to set up a Reformed pedagogy by means of both the Reformed theological tradition and modern empirical research in education from a Reformed world view.
