How to receive English literature in Korea has been a crucial question involving various arguments in complicated contexts. Post-colonialism took the lead in revealing and debunking the hidden value system in English literature that serves cultural imperialism. However, this critical approach tends to remain indifferent to the “literary value” only to ignore the potential power for resistance and solidarity contained in literary works par excellence. Against the grain of post-colonialist reading, this paper purports to read Wordsworth’s cultural exertion displayed in his poetic treatment of “nature” in the “spots of time” episodes of Prelude. Makdisi’s post-colonialist reading interprets nature in Wordsworth’s poetry as a shelter and refuge which Wordsworth tried to secure for subjective stability to escape from the terror of urbane modernization rather than a source of recovery of the human mind; nature is presented as images for human potential instead of real landscapes. However, this is a misreading of Wordsworth’s challenging response to modernization that distorts the meaning of Wordsworth’s nature. As confirmed in a fuller scrutiny of “spots of time” episodes, nature is inseparably conjoined with human passion and thus cannot be reduced to images. In such an interpenetrative synthesis of two entities, nature becomes a repository of cultural memory whose essential element is human feelings. In this sense, Wordsworth’s critique of modernization has the character of restoring the history of emotion and of overcoming the paradigm and epistemology of modernization. To pay due attention to these cultural attempts is a way of reading Wordsworth’s poetry on our own.
