The purpose of this study is to find out various survival strategies for the elderly households. The survival strategies were analyzed in four dimensions ; economic, emotional, health, and daily life management. The data were collected from the urban and rural areas. The respondents were the elderly people living with their spouses only. Based on the results from the focus group study, the questionnaire was constructed and distributed to 300 elderly households and 253 households were analyzed for the study. The household formation process for the elderly showed that the elderly household type is not just a temporary family type but rather an increasing family type for the future. At the economic and health dimensions, the elderly people showed various different survival strategies according to the socioeconomic variables such as sex, education level, economic level, residential types. At the emotional dimension, the survival strategies the elder people used were different between men and women. Other socioeconomic variables showed no effect on the emotional survival strategies. At the daily life management dimension, the elderly people showed different sirvival stratregies with regards to sex and economic status, but not to the educational level or residential types. Finally, comprehensive welfare policies were suggested for the elderly households in order to improve their welfare conditions.
