이종성 박사의 섭리론과 예정론에 대한 이해 = Dr. Jong-Sung Lee`s Understanding of Providence and Predestination

The purpose of this article is to show and to organize characters of Dr. Jongsung Lee``s ``the Doctrine of providence`` and ``the Doctrine of predestination.`` The doctrine of providence was an important issue in his doctrine of God. He tried to reveal God``s absolute sovereignty and Grace``s absoluteness through the doctrine of providence. In comparison, his doctrine of predestination played a subsidiary role as emphasizing on God``s sovereignty and on being God as Creator. I believe that his doctrine of providence and predestination was based on the Creator God. Because he insisted that Creator God uses ``predestination`` and ``providence`` for achieving His purpose. The providence of Creator God has an intention of universal sovereignty and salvation. And he highlighted a reformed spirit as ``soli Deo gloria.`` There are some noteworthy features in his doctrine of providence and of predestination. First, Dr. Lee ranged over ``the relation between the God``s will and man``s free will`` which is one of the traditional questions. He tried to overcome confrontation between Calvinism as focusing on Absolute sovereignty and Wesleyanism stressing man``s will. But he did not give a new answer. His explanation repeated Calvinists`` understanding. Second, he mentioned universalism which is an issue that has been debated over long time and made a positive evaluation of it. He told that the reformed church``s tradition has been the particularism. But he concluded that the tradition is the universalism, when we read the Bible in a creation-theological aspect. Third, Dr. Lee focused on predestination``s ethical aspect. He believed that the doctrine of predestination and the ethic are complementary. However, an influence of his predestination was reduced than Augustine``s, Calvin``s and Barth``s, though he respected them as standards of theology. His predestination became an assistant theory for supporting the doctrine of providence. The ecclesiological understanding of predestination as ``the church as the elect of God`` was shown in the above mentioned three theologians, but is not shown in him. The relation between Christ and predestination-electio in Christo -was shown in the theology of reformers and Barth. But it is not shown in his, too. It showed that Dr. Lee, Jong-sung put the doctrine of providence in the center of his theology instead of the doctrine of predestination.
