This study attempted to approach and interpret ballroom dance (also called social dance or mudo (舞蹈) in Korea) from the socio-cultural and educational aspects. For this, we selected and analyzed newspaper articles from the 1950s when ballroom dance began to settle in Korea to the 1980s before its name was changed to DanceSport. Conclusions drawn from this study are as follows. First, in the socio-cultural aspect, the indiscreet introduction of Western dance culture not conformable to Korean traditional ethics and sentiment was resisted by people due to lack of awareness and misunderstanding of foreign cultures. As a result, ballroom dance could not settled in a healthy way but illicit dance halls prevailed under the government`s regulation and control and caused social problems and therefore ballroom dance was regarded as a negative culture. Second, articles in the educational aspect show that the foundation of the Korean Ballroom dance Art Association, the first National Ballroom dance Championship, various programs and events at YWCA and YMCA, etc. corrected the wrong perception of ballroom dance and provided places and programs for the education of healthy ballroom dance.
