국문 초록 (Abstract)

여학생의 낮은 출석률과 높은 중퇴율은 많은 개발도상국이 겪고 있는 심각한 교육문제이며 사회 전체의 생산성에 부정적인 영향을 끼치고 있다. 이에 대한 다양한 이론적 연구가 진행되었으나 현지조사를 통한 마을 단위의 연구는 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구는 도미니카공화국 현지 조사를 통하여 여학생의 낮은 출석률과 높은 중퇴율에 대한 원인을 분석하고 이를 통해 여학생의 교육 상황을 개선시킬 수 있는 방법을 찾고자 하였다. 주요 이해관계자와의 심층면접, 여학생과 공동체 구성원들과의 초점집단면접을 통해, 가정의 경제적 상황, 여학생의 가사노동, 10대 임신이 여학생의 교육을 저해하는 주요 요인으로 확인되었다. 반면, 남녀 불평등에 대한 인식은 사실상 여학생 교육에 크게 영향을 미치지 않았으며 오히려 성교육에 대한 부정적인 인식이 10대 임신율을 높이는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 여학생 교육 상황을 개선하기 위한 정부와 국제개발협력 주체의 지원과 가계소득 증대를 위한 노력이 필요한 것으로 보인다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

High rates of school drop-out and absenteeism among adolescent girls are one of the most critical socio-economic problems facing many developing countries today. A number of theories have been proposed to explain the causes of these phenomena, but few of them is founded on an in-depth study of a rural community in a developing country. This study investigates the cases of girls’ under-enrollment in schools by conducting two pieces of field research in the village of Juan Jimenez in Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic: in-depth interviews with community leaders, teachers and parents, and focus group discussions with adolescent girls and villagers. We find that poverty, teenage pregnancy, and household labor are vital causes of school dropout and absence in the study group. While perceptions of gender inequality do not exert significant effects on girls’ educational attainment, parents’ negative attitudes towards sex education are found to increase the likelihood of teenage pregnancy. These findings suggest that efforts to prevent school absenteeism and dropout among female students must be strongly linked to the government"s agenda for education and gender equality.
