This study was conducted to develop improvement strategies for medical device workforce training systems in response to the rapid growth of the biohealth industry and increasing demand for specialized personnel. The biohealth industry anticipates a demand for 108,700 new workers over the next five years through 2027.
Notably, research development and regulatory approval sectors account for 30.5% of total workforce, highlighting the knowledgeintensive nature of the industry requiring high expertise.
This research analyzed medical device training programs of the US FDA, Japan's PMDA, Canada's Health Canada, and Korea's MFDS, establishing analysis criteria including educational operational system expertise, alignment with national policy objectives, international regulatory harmonization response, and industryacademia-research cooperation frameworks. Systematic data collection and analysis were conducted using official websites, educational materials, and policies from each regulatory authority.
The analysis revealed that while Korea's educational system has an integrated structure encompassing industry, academia, and clinical settings, it faces structural limitations including restricted access to educational platforms, lack of dedicated educational organizations, and insufficient practical training. In particular, the study confirmed the need for advanced educational systems as the industry restructures around new technologies like digital healthcare and AI
medical devices.
This study is significant in suggesting institutional improvements for Korean medical device workforce development through analysis of global regulatory authorities' educational systems. The findings are expected to serve as foundational data for sustainable development of the biohealth industry.
