<영화의 역사(들)>(고다르)의 벤야민적 역사인식과 역사서술 방식 = 역사와 몽타주, 역사의 몽타주 원칙

국문 초록 (Abstract)

고다르의 ‘영화로 쓴 영화사’ <영화의 역사(들)>(1988-1998년)는 영화사를 만든 영화들의 인용과 영화의 이미지들이 소환하는 세계의 기억들의 재구성으로 이루어진 허구적 역사이다. 본 논문은 <영화의 역사(들)>의 역사서술 방법론 및 그에 함축된 역사인식을 벤야민이 『아케이드 프로젝트』와 “역사 개념에 관하여”에서 제기한 ‘변증법적 이미지’, ‘몽타주’ 등의 개념, 그리고 이 개념들을 주조한 벤야민의 역사인식, 곧 역사유물론과의 비교를 통해 고찰하고자 한다. 벤야민은 시간의 인과론적 모델에 기반한 역사에 관한 선형적, 관념적 인식들을 비판하며, 역사를 시동시키는 것은 과거의 사실을 환기하는 운동, 그리고 이를 다시 역사가의 현재적 앎과 지식 속에서 구축하는 ‘지금’의 운동이라고 강조한다. 과거의 사실들이 우리의 현재 감각에 충격을 주며 변증법적 운동 속에서 드러날 때, 이것이 바로 ‘환기하는 현재’라는 ‘변증법적 이미지’의 출현이다. 역사유물론에서 중요한 것은 바로 이 위기의 순간, 즉 비판적 순간에 불현듯 역사의 주제로 제시되는 과거의 이미지를 포착하는 것이다. 이미지는 역사의 비판적 순간에 문제적으로 출현한 ‘정지 상태의 변증법’으로서, 변증법적 이미지의 출현은 이미지가 지닌 역사적 표지가 가독성에 이르렀음을 말한다. 이것이 바로 벤야민이 말하는 역사의 ‘몽타주 원칙’이다. 고다르의 <영화의 역사(들)>은 영화사의 흔적-이미지들로부터 추출된 잠재상태의 혼종적 이미지들의 재몽타주를 통해 영화와 세계를 현재적으로, 곧 역사적으로 이해하고자 한 변증법적 이미지들의 역사 형식이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard is one of the historians of cinema, who has the most thoughtfully studied the relation between cinema and history in the most radically cinematic way. Especially in Histoire(s) du cinéma, Godard has historized cinema (and images) through its own matters and mechanisms by the experimentation with montage, both in its dimension as a tool for creation and as a conceptual thinking category. According to godardian theorem, cinema as a medium and a vector of historical thought reconstitutes the concept, the experience and the form of history. Walter Benjamin’s concept of the “dialectical image” seems to impose as a conceptual framework for understanding the effect of Godard"s historiographical methodology. The dialectical image is typified by a flash-like coming together of past and present, which forms a constellation of ephemeral, fleeting duration, whose potential meaning or affect is elusive, shifting, polysemic. In the Arcades Project, Benjamin extends the notion, and apply it to a dialectical approach to history. The concept of the “dialectical image” informs especially Benjamin’s historical method in “Theses on the Philosophy of History” where he develops an idiosyncratic version of historical materialism. The Arcades Project contains a theoretical exposition of the dialectical image and its entire formal structure is permeated by the notion. A gargantuan collection of brief extracts is assembled into constellations of text given an elaborate alphanumeric code. With the connections between passages, Benjamin avowed that the method of his project was one of “literary montage”. Jean-Luc Godard"s monumental and multifaceted video-essay Histoire(s) du Cinéma has been constituted by this montage practice based on the dialectical image.
