This article, aiming to theorize “the political” as a core category of historical scholarship, examines the thinking of several Western historians and historical theorists of the late 20th century who understood the essence and meaning of “the political” as fundamental to history and the human world. Tracing these intellectual trajectories, framed by the three problematics of ideology, power, and freedom, offers a critical reflection on the workings and practical effects of political ideas, as well as a prospect for liberating themselves from the doctrine of “historical necessity” inherent in all modern ideologies. This discussion elucidates that history is a discipline that prioritizes the discrepancy between ideology and reality over ideology itself. The designation of “the political” as the collective term for all the human impulses and absurdities that surge within this discrepancy contributes to expanding existing historical categorization.
