국가폭력 연구의 최근 경향과 새로운 연구 방향 모색 = Recent Tendency in the Study of State Violence and Exploration of its New Direction

This study is an attempt to examine recent tendency in the study of the state violence as a major and growing world problem and explore its new direction. State violence which refers to the use or threat of violence by the state or its agents or supporters, particularly against civilian individuals and populations, as a means of political intimidation and control, has grown massively and significantly since World War Ⅱ, especially Mesoamerica, Asia and Africa.
There appear to be two major theories of why state violence has grown so rapidly since World War Ⅱ. One is a basically structural-functional theory that violence results from the inherent weakness of the modern state, evidenced in the growing number of states suffering ‘crises of integration’. Second is a power-conflict theory that violence results from the strength of the state and the massive and ever increasing concentration of power in the hands of national and international elites. I think there is a direct correlation between the increasing power and wealth of the elite, the steadily increasing gap between the rich and the poor, and the growth of state violence.
Recently the studies of state violence focus on the origin and history of state violence, violence and anti-violence, socio-psychological basis of state violence, and fascism and violence. In Korea, the studies of state violence have carried out


full-scale since 1990's. Hereafter the studies of state violence in Korea should be proceeded to the sufferer and the offender simultaneously.
