Action Research of the Literary Education in Low-Primary Classroom－Understanding Teaching and Learning as Sociocultural ProcessesJeong, Hyeon-Seon and Lee, Mi-SukThis article focuses on the ways in which teacher and pupils might communicate in primary classroom where pupils would be encouraged to create their own picture book based on their personal experiences and imagination. While the research was originally intended to explore what and how the children might write their own personal stories, particularly when they would be asked to write about their imaginary, secret friends who could be seen only to their eyes. However, the results of the pupils' writings appeared to reproduce the teacher's exemplary stories presented in the classroom, rather than to express their own inner worlds. Exploring the possible reasons of such results, the researchers carefully analyzed the classroom discourse which was recorded and transcribed. The main findings of the classroom discourse show that ways in which the task was presented was not sufficient to encourage pupils' own imagination and personal experiences, considering that the pupils might have taken the teacher's examples as the models to follow. The key finding of this research is that while the task itself is important for creative writing, the classroom culture needs to be carefully considered in order for pupils to express their personal experiences and explore their identities.
