The purposes of this research lies in capturing sorts and frequency of slang words used by high school student when students have conversations and also grasping the motivations that make students use them and circumstances in which students use them. I defined the notions of argot and slang word in advance in order to describe actual using conditions of slang words among students and through these definitions I classified the words that had classified as argot up to present as slang word.
I divided the actual using conditions of slang words among students into two categories-slang words as spoken language and slang words as written language to grasp them more substantially. I analyzed 25 materials recording conversation among students to find out the slang words as spoken language. The results of analyzing sorted by gender were as followings.
First, in cases of conversation among male students their slang words were arranged in the order of frequency of use like ‘jon-na’, ‘ssi-bal’, ‘ee-sae-ggi’, ‘gae-sae-ggi’ etc. and they used ‘ee-sae-ggi’, ‘jeo-sae-ggi’, ‘keu-sae-ggi’ when they referred to their friends
Second, in cases of conversation among female students ‘jonna’ was most frequently used but they used much less slang words in their converastions in comparison with that of male students.
Third, in cases of conversation between male and female students they used ‘jon-na’, ‘byeong-sin’, ‘ssi-bal’ in the order of frequency of use but they hardly abused opposite sex.
I analyzed 136 conversations that contained slang words in a visitor's book of cyworld mini homepage and 71 text message of cellular phone to to find out the slang words as written language. The results of analyzing sorted by gender were as followings.
First, in cases of conversation among male students their slang words were arranged in the order of frequency of use like ‘jon-na’, ‘ssi-bal’, ‘gae-sae-ggi’ and ‘ssi-bal’ had nine variations.
Second, in cases of conversation among female students their slang words were arranged in the order of frequency of use like ‘jon-na’, ‘ji-ral’, ‘mi-chin’ etc. and they used slang words more frequently in written language as compared against spoken language.
Third in cases of conversation between male and female students ‘jonna’, ‘ssibal’ were frequently used. in addition, in caes of text message of cellular phone the order of frequency of use was as followings ‘jon-na’, ‘ssi-bal’, ‘mi-chin’ etc.
I concluded that students' motivation for using slang words were to feel pleasant feeling through new expression that get out of ordinary and trivial way of expressing, to push out their negative emotions in their mind consciously or unconsciously, not to be treated distantly by their friends. when it comes to the situation that slang words were used, usages of verbal and adjective slang words were restricted according to the situations, on the other hand, in case terms of abuse one vocabulary could be used in various situations such as expressing a feeling of intimacy, worrying about their friends, blaming oneself, deriding or ignoring others, expressing discontent or antipathy to certain objects, showing hatred or rarely resisting others.
