This study examines Edogawa Ranpo's 1925 short story The Psychological Test as a cultural-historical text in which the reception of modern psychology in 1920s Japan intersects with the popular imagination. In this period, applied psychology was widely embraced for industrial efficiency and educational selection purposes, fostering expectations for "scientific investigations" modeled on Hugo Münsterberg's theories, while forensic psychology was disseminated mainly through media amid the delayed institutionalization of forensic psychology in the judicial system. Against this backdrop, Ranpo contrasts Judge Kasamori's "mechanistic gaze" with the criminal Fukiya's "intellectual resistance." Kasamori attempts to reduce the human mind to quantified data through association experiments, but Fukiya neutralizes this psychological surveillance through a calculated practice of "self-testing," exposing the epistemological limits of stimulus–response models of modern science. The narrative reaches its resolution at the point where the mechanical measurement of psychological truth breaks down, through the intuitive insights of Detective Akechi Kogoro. By recovering the "invisible mind" overlooked by data, Akechi mediates the public's ambivalence between faith in scientific omnipotence and fear of surveillance. In this light, The Psychological Test emerges as a literary defense of the irreducible uniqueness of the human psyche and a historical allegory revealing the fissures of modern rationality.
