국내 패션과 네일아트 트렌드의 상관연구 = A Study of Correlation between Domestic Fashion and Nail Art Trends

(Abstract)
This study aims to analyze and compare domestic fashion trends and nail-art trends; to reveal their correlation; to be of help in cultivation of talented people and self-improvement by inferring nail-art trends from fashion trends; and to serve as a preliminary data in developing the domestic nail-art market.
Seoul Collections, the most representative collections in Korea, were selected to analyze fashion trends in this paper. 745 pieces from 9 designers, who had participated in the collections more than 5 seasons out of 6 seasons ranged from S/S 2007 to F/W 2009, were put to use to be analyzed. To assess nail-art trends, 787 artworks from 2007 to 2009 which had been included in NAILPIA, one of the nail-specialized magazines published in Korea, were collected. Each piece was classified, assessed, and compared according to colors, patterns, and decorative features. 7 specialists of fashion and nail-art took part in questionnaire surveys to verify the study with objectiveness. The results are as follows.
First of all, in terms of colors in fashion trends, the orders of the frequently used colors were White>Black>Y series>R series>Gray>B series>G series>P series in S/S 2007 and Black>White>Gray>R series>B series>Y series>G series>P series in F/W 2007. In S/S 2008, White>Black>Gray>R series>Y series and B series>G series>P series were the order of frequency of use, whereas Black>R series>Gray>White>Y series>G series>P series>B series were the order in F/W 2008. The frequency orders in 2009 were Black>White>Y series>Gray>R series>B series>G series>P series and Black>White>Gray>R series>G series and Y series>B series>P series respectively in S/S and F/W.
For patterns, S/S 2007 witnessed the most repeatedly used patterns in order of stripes>flowers>dots>stars·ribbons·hearts>geometric ones> checked ones >letters>animals >illustrations>gradations>characters, The patterns used most frequently in F/W 2007 were stripes>dots>checked ones>flowers>geometric ones>stars·ribbons·hearts>animals>letters>gradations>illustrations>characters. The frequency order of the patterns of S/S 2008 was geometric ones>dots> flowers>checked ones>stripes>illustrations>stars·ribbons·hearts>letters>gradations> animals>characters and the order of F/W 2008 was flowers>stripes>geometric ones>animals>checked ones>dots>letters>stars·ribbons·hearts>gradations> illustrations> characters. Geometric ones>flowers>checked ones>dots>stripes>letters and stars· ribbons·hearts>gradations>illustrations>animals>characters were the frequency order of S/S 2009 and flowers>geometric ones>stripes>checked ones>stars· ribbons·hearts>gradations and letters>dots>animals>illustrations>characters were the one of F/W 2009.
Considering decorative elements, in 2007 metal ornaments>lace>ribbons>flowers> spangles>cubics>pearls>furs were the sequence of frequency and metal ornaments> ribbons>furs>lace>spangles>flowers>cubics>pearls were the one of frequency in S/S and F/W respectively. The frequency order of 2008 was metal ornaments> ribbons>spangles>lace>cubics>furs >flowers>pearls in S/S, while lace>ribbons> metal ornaments>flowers>furs>spangles>cubics>pearls were the order in F/W. On the other hand, the year 2009 showed the most preferred elements in the order of lace>metal ornaments>flowers>spangles>cubics>pearls>furs in S/S and metal ornaments>ribbons>lace>flowers>furs>spangles>cubics>pearls in F/W.

Secondly, when it comes to the colors applied in nail-art trends, In S/S 2007, White>R series>Black>Y series and B series>G series>Gray>P series were the order of frequency of use, whereas White>Black>R series>Y series>B series> Gray>G series>P series were the order in F/W 2007. The orders of the frequently used colors in S/S 2008 were White>R series>Black>Y series>B series>G series and Gray>P series, whereas Black>R series>Gray>White and Y series>B series>G series>P series in F/W 2008. The orders of 2009 were R series>White>Black>Y series>B series>G series>P series>Gray in S/S and Black>White>R series>Y series>Gray>B series>P series>G series in F/W.
Regarding patterns, Flowers>geometric ones>gradated ones>stripes>checked ones>dots and animals>illustrations>characters and letters and stars·ribbons·hearts> were the frequency order of S/S 2007 and geometric ones>flowers>gradated ones>stripes>dots and checked ones and animals>stars·ribbons·hearts>letters> illustrations>characters were the one of F/W S/S 2008 showed the most preferred patterns in order of geometric ones>flowers>gradated ones>dots> stars·ribbons·hearts>stripes>animals>checked ones>illustrations>letters and characters. In contrast, the patterns used most frequently in F/W 2008 were geometric ones>gradated ones>animals>flowers and dots>stripes and checked ones>letters and illustrations and characters and stars·ribbons·hearts. The frequency order of the patterns of S/S 2009 was flowers>geometric ones>gradated ones>animals >stripes >dots >stars·ribbons·hearts>checked ones>illustrations >characters and letters and the order of F/W 2009 was flowers>gradated ones and geometric ones>checked ones>animals>stars·ribbons·hearts>stripes>dots>characters>illustrations> letters.
As for decorative elements, the frequency order of 2007 was cubics> spangles>flowers>metal ornaments >pearls>ribbons>lace>furs in S/S. However, cubics>spangles>metal ornaments>flowers>pearls>ribbons and lace and furs were the sequencer in F/W. In 2008, the most preferred elements were in the order of cubics>spangles>flowers>metal ornaments>pearls>ribbons>lace and furs in S/S and spangles>cubics>metal ornaments and pearls and flowers> ribbons and lace and furs in F/W. In addition, In S/S 2009, cubics>spangles> metal ornaments>flowers>pearls and ribbons>lace>furs were the order of frequency and cubics>spangles>metal ornaments>flowers>pearls> ribbons>lace and furs were the order of the repeated use in F/W.

Third, when the colors used in fashion trends and nail-art trends were compared together, the frequency order in fashion was mostly White which is included in N series>Black>Gray>R series> Y series>B series> G series>P series. In nail-art, White which belongs to N series>R series>Black>Y series>B series>Gray>G series>P series were the order. This reveals that the frequency of colors in fashion and that in nail-art have the frequency levels in common except for gray which belongs to N series.
With regard to patterns, strips, flowers. geometric one, and dots were strong every season, while characters or illustrated patterns scarcely appeared. On the other hand, flowers, gradated ones, geometric ones, starts·ribbons·heart-shaped ones, dotts were the most preferred pattersn in nail-art. The patterns which fashion and nail-art had in common were the ones composed of flowers, geometric figures, stripes and dots. However, characters or illustrated ones were seldom seen.
In comparison of changes of decorative features, metal ornaments, lace, flowers, and spangles were commonly used regarding fashion. Furs were those which suffered seasonal changes drastically, in that they had appeared a lot in F/W season, while they had not been introduced in S/S seasons. In nail-art, on the other hand, cubics, spangles, and metal ornaments were often applied, whereas lace, ribbons, and furs hardly emerged as decorative factors because it is uncomfortable to wear them in our daily lives. Instead, the were represented as various patterns. The commonly used decorative elements both in fashion and in nail-art were metal ornaments and spangles. Moreover, there were some differences depending on the characteristics of materials of the decorative elements.

In conclusion, it was confirmed that there was a correlation between nail-art trends in Korean and fashion trends. The results of the current study would not only allow people to cope with rapid fashion trends promptly but offer a foundation for the development of the nail-art industry as well.
