Recently, there are more and more consumers who aim to purchase DIY products that could be built up by themselves. DIY means the half-finished products that are directly put together or produced by consumers.
Through the process of putting together and completing the products, consumers feel a sense of accomplishment and attached to the products. IKEA might be a representative case of this. The products of IKEA make users feel a sense of accomplishment and attached to the products by giving them a chance to assemble the products.
This study provides consumers with a right to choose materials by making them experience the previous process of assembling stage like the process of producing the half-finished products using CNC.
This could be a new opportunity for consumers to experience the composition of their own furniture by selecting various materials, and also become the new measures for selling the dataficated design to consumers, instead of outputs.
Under this background, the objective of this study is to show the diverse directions of variable furniture and new experiences to users, by understanding the concept of CNC, analyzing the problems of variable furniture of domestic furniture brands, and then suggesting the DIY variable furniture.
The process and conclusions of this study are as follows. First, by understanding the concept of CNC and drawing the advantageous elements through the theoretical consideration, they were applied to the development of DIY variable furniture. Also, the concept and types of variable furniture and the concept of DIY were understood. Moreover, applying the characteristics of DIY such as the utilization of volume, creative activity, and efficiency of transportation/ shipping, the concept of DIY variable furniture was defined as the multi-functional form that could meet diverse needs of users.
Second, the research/analysis on the cases of utilizing variable furniture currently sold by domestic furniture brands drew the incomplete scope of transformation, increase of loadage in the shipping process, fixed utilization only for specific space, limited suggestion of materials, and price burden.
Third, based on the problems drawn through preceding researches, the design direction of DIY variable furniture was set up. Instead of selling the finished products, this study developed/suggested the new direction of selling the designed plan through the datafication of plans which would be a merit of CNC.
Lastly, the utilization of the developed DIY variable furniture was suggested. The suggestion of the utilization is about diverse functions and utilization that could be directly experienced by users in the process of use. Moreover, on top of the variability of modularobject speaker combined with DIY variable furniture, the experience was diversified, drawn, and suggested in different forms.
