Urban agriculture has many advantages such as producing food, securing green space, reducing city temperature, leisure activities and so on. It also encourage people to reduce food mileage by consuming the local food. This study mainly aims to estimate the amount of transportation emission reduction resulted from supplying the local crops.
This study computed the area of the flat roof tops and green fields in the residential, commercial and business areas, mixed land use areas, public facilities areas and urban infrastructure facilities areas in Seoul. Among the total areas, it is assumed that urban agriculture can be possible in 30% of rooftop areas and 50% of green fields. In addition, we assumed 1㎡ for each apartment house for indoor agriculture. In given areas, we calculated the amount of crops and food mileages. Then we converted it into the amount of carbon dioxide emission reduction.
Analysis showed that urban agriculture can be engaged in 51.15㎢ in Seoul and, in accordance with reduction of food mileage, 11,663,979㎏ carbon dioxide could be reduced. This result shows the importance of urban agriculture in the climate change from the confrontational aspect. For promoting urban agriculture, we suggested adjustment of environmental policies including changes in city planning for urban farmland conservation and in environmental assessment measures.
