Q-switched ruby laser is a very useful instrument for the treatment of tattoo. The instrument does not cause any complications such as tissue injury and scar formation after treatment, because it has several advantageous physical characters.
However it has a major problem, as pointed out by many clinicians, that repeated treatments are essential for more improved result. And yet, there is no agreement about the treatment interval in using Q-switched ruby laser because of its short clinical experiences and lack of experimental studies.
In this experiment, the author tattooed at the back skin of rats and treated them twice using Q-switched ruby laser according to 6 groups of treatment intervals( 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks ) . And then, the author analysed the histology and final therapeutic results of the 6 groups to find out a reasonable and shorter treatment interval by which we can get the effective therapeutic result without any permanent tissue injuries and change of skin texture.
The results were as follows ;
1. The author observed the early healing process of tissue injury at the specimen of 2 weeks after irradiation of Q-switched ruby laser.
2. The nucleus of macrophages were changed into pyknosis and most of organelles in the cells except lysosomes and phagosomes showed degenerative changes in all specimens more than 2 weeks after laser irradiation.
3. The tissue was healed as a nearly normal state from the specimen of 4 weeks after laser irradiation.
4. All specimens at 8 weeks after repeated treatments did not show any noticeable tissue injuries regardless of treatment intervals.
5. The final macroscopic result in the group of 2 weeks was statistically same as groups of treatment interval more than 2 weeks.
These results show that the 2 weeks treatment interval of Q-switched ruby laser for the tattoo removal in rat is the shortest term by which we can get effective therapeutic results without permanent tissue injury.
